In partnership between imagineNATIVE, Gallery 44 and curator Amanda Strong, RESONATE brings together four unique Indigenous youth collaborations showcasing photography, film, radio and interactive multimedia art that speak to their experiences, feelings and perspectives through various mediums of artistic exploration.
Media Creatorz and the Liaison of Independent Filmmakers of Toronto (LIFT) present a collection of super 8 films created by 7 indigenous youth. Participants worked with a mentor filmmakers John Hupfield, Amanda Strong and Miles Turner to write, direct, shoot and edit a short film using super 8 film and final cut editing . Media Creatorz was formed in 2009 with the aims of providing workshops and opportunities for indigenous youth to express themselves via media arts and film. Participants included Nishka Turner, Leslie McCue (Ojibway), Asivak Koostachin (Cree/Inuit), Cecily Jacko (Ojibway), Kyle Burton (Metis) , Jared Robilliard (Dene) and Damien Bouchard (Ojibway).
7th Generation Image Makers and Gallery 44 present a series of photographic self portraits created by eight indigenous youth. Through Gallery 44 and LIFT facilities, the youth engaged in photography basics, conceptual process and finally the skillsets in Adobe Photoshop and After Effects. The works express the exploration of self through the youths perspectives. 7th Gen is a dynamic Aboriginal youth arts program operating within Native Child and Family Services of Toronto. Drop-in art space, community projects, where professional Aboriginal artists, mentors and elders provide quality and accessible programming in a culturally supportive and safe environment. Most programming centers around community workshops, drop-in art hours for youth, as well as public and private arts commissions. Participants included Nishka Turner (Mokawk), Leslie McCue (Ojibway), Cheyenne Scott (Coast Salish), Nigel Irwin-Brochmann (Cree), Emily Jones (Algonquin), Alice Thompson (Cherokee) and Alana Mcleod (Metis).
imagineNATIVE and New Adventures in Sound Art (NAISA) present a commission of radio artworks created by four Aboriginal youth. Through Sound Art Residency workshops in the NAISA studio, youth developed their understanding and skills of sound-based media art, including sound theory, Indigenous perspectives on sound art, capturing and recording content, sound editing, and storytelling. Selected participants include Cheyenne Scott (Coast Salish), Judith Schuyler (Oneida), Michele Lonechild (Ojibway/Plains Cree) and Leslie McCue (Ojibway) The installation involves the works presented from individual radios hidden in a plinth, creating a unique aural experience.
Amanda Strong (Métis) is a multi-disciplinary artist and was the imagineNATIVE/LIFT Mentorship recipient in 2010, completing the experimental short, Honey for Sale.
