With MONO NO MA, acclaimed Liu explores the spaces around things.  Mono means ‘object’ in Japanese, and is paired with the more elusive word ma, meaning ‘space’ or ‘gap’. Together they describe an exhibit which is simultaneously aware of form and non-form.

Renowned for making evocative sculptures from found objects, Liu decided to embrace the medium of ceramics and in MONO NO MA, strikes a balance between the familiar and the enigmatic, material and immaterial, thing and no-thing.

An Te Liu’s MONO NO MA Takes Inspiration from Gardiner Museum is open: September 7 – November 11, 2013
